Michael Orsi (Associate)

Michael focuses his practice in the area of medical malpractice defense. He represents physicians, hospitals, nurses, and numerous other healthcare providers in professional and institutional negligence claims of all types including those involving catastrophic injuries. Michael also represents hospitals and providers in numerous administrative proceedings including licensure and credentialing actions. 
 
Michael has handled every aspect of medical malpractice claims from pre-suit review through trial or settlement and appellate review. He is regularly invited to speak to hospitals and providers on numerous topics including the Medical Studies Act.
 
Prior to law school Michael worked in law enforcement obtaining special training in accident reconstruction from Northwestern and obtaining his State of Illinois certification. During law school he was a judicial extern for the Honorable J. Edward Prochaska of the 17th Judicial Circuit of Winnebago County. Prior to Heyl Royster, Michael was in-house in the legal department of a major health system, where he handled all aspects of medical malpractice litigation and various corporate matters.

Significant Cases

  • Part of trial team that obtained a defense verdict for a gastroenterologist and his group following a jury trial where the Plaintiff asserted that the physician failed to obtain informed consent prior to a colonoscopy and negligently perforated the bowel resulting in multiple complications, gastrointestinal issues, and permanent scarring.
  • Obtained summary judgment for a hospital in a multi-million dollar medical malpractice case where the Plaintiff asserted the provider at issue was an apparent agent of the hospital. Summary judgment was obtained on the hospital’s consent form alone.
  • Obtained summary judgment for hospital and provider in a wrongful death claim where Plaintiff failed to support the allegations in the complaint with the necessary expert testimony.
  • Obtained summary judgment on a Plaintiff’s res ipsa claim involving the Plaintiff’s claim she acquired an infection from the hospital. Plaintiff suffered numerous complications as a result of the infection including multiple surgeries.

  • Named to the Illinois Super Lawyers Rising Stars list (2017-2018). The Super Lawyers Rising Stars selection process is based on peer recognition and professional achievement.
