Heyl, Royster, Voelker & Allen, P.C., a regional law firm, based in Peoria, IL, with over 100 attorneys in eight offices, is seeking qualified applicants for our Human Resource and Benefits Manager.  The HR and Benefits Manager is responsible for all aspects of the HR department including applying company policies and procedures, hiring and interviewing staff, administering employee benefit and leave programs, and ensuring that the firm is in full compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The position works closely with the Executive Director in developing, implementing and evaluating ongoing HR policies, programs, functions and activities.

Essential functions include:

  • Partners with firm management to develop, understand and execute the firm’s human resource and talent strategy particularly as it relates to current and future talent needs, recruiting, and retention
  • Develop accurate job descriptions and hiring criteria
  • Recruit, interview and facilitate the hiring of qualified job applicants
  • Conduct background checks and employee eligibility verifications
  • Perform new hire orientation
  • Manage the annual performance review process
  • Review, track, and document compliance with mandatory training and continuing education requirements
  • Attend and participate in employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations
  • Maintain compliance with all laws and regulations, recommended best practices, and review policies and procedures to maintain compliance
  • Administer all benefit programs including health benefits, 401(k), and disability
  • Serve as primary contact for plan vendors and third-party administrators
  • Provide customer service support to internal and external customers

Successful candidates should possess the following:

  • Proven working experience as HR manager
  • People oriented and results driven
  • Knowledge of HR systems and databases
  • Ability to develop strategy
  • Excellent active listening, negotiation and presentation skills
  • Competence to build and effectively manage interpersonal relationships at all levels of the company
  • In-depth knowledge of labor law and HR best practices
  • Knowledge of all pertinent regulations, filing and compliance requirements affecting employee benefits programs
  • Strong analytical skills and a thorough knowledge of plan design
  • Ability to handle stressful situations acting with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree in human resource management or related field
  • Five years of related experience
  • SHRM-CP professional designations desired
