Payroll Specialist

Heyl, Royster, Voelker & Allen, P.C., a regional law firm, based in Peoria, IL, with over 100 attorneys in eight offices, is seeking qualified applicants for a Payroll Specialist in our Peoria office.

Essential functions include:

  • Enters, maintains, and processes information in the payroll system
  • Ensures proper processing of payroll deductions for taxes, benefits, and other deductions
  • Reconcile payroll to the general ledger and monthly bank statement
  • Issues physical or replacement checks or direct deposits due to payroll errors or final discharge
  • Record and process federal and state payroll tax deposits
  • Identify, recommend and advise management of improvements that can be made to software, systems, and procedures
  • Communicate professionally and provide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers

Successful candidates should possess the following:

  • Extensive knowledge of payroll functions including preparation, balancing, and payroll taxes
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
  • Proficient with or the ability to quickly learn payroll software
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to organize, plan and prioritize work
  • Ability to handle stress and meet deadlines

Qualifications include:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Three to five years of experience in similar role
