Sustainability Initiative

Heyl Royster is respectful of the communities where we work and live and forms positive relationships with them. We do this in part by being environmentally responsible.

As Heyl Royster begins its second century of service, our lawyers and staff are placing renewed emphasis on the use of sustainability values in our practice of law. We share the values of our clients and communities in a mutual commitment to the protection of the environment. Our "Practicing Green" initiative - choosing environmentally sound policies that provide sound legal and business solutions for our firm and our clients - guides all activities within our practice.

The American Bar Association (ABA) and its Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources (SEER) has recognized Heyl, Royster, Voelker & Allen for its participation in taking action toward environmental sustainability. SEER and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have designed a program to encourage law offices to take simple, practical steps to become better environmental and energy stewards. Through our enrollment in the Best Practices for Office Paper Management program, we have become a Law Office Climate Challenge Partner. Heyl Royster joins more than 200 law firms and organizations that have qualified as ABA-EPA Law Office Climate Challenge Partners or Leaders.

The firm maintains a Sustainability Initiative Scorecard outlining various practices that highlights the firm's sustainability efforts. A number of these goals were met in all of Heyl Royster's offices. These goals include:

  • Recycle paper
  • Eliminate Styrofoam and plastic
  • Bottled water replaced by filtered water
  • Recycle printer/toner cartridges
  • Recycle batteries
  • Recycle bottle and aluminum cans
  • Recycle newspapers, magazines and cardboard
  • Donate obsolete equipment
  • Recycle law library books
  • Utilize rerouting circulation envelopes
  • Personnel memos submitted electronically
  • Newsletters distributed electronically
  • Electronic faxes
  • Repurpose office supplies
  • Conserve electric energy
We continue to work on new goals and will supplement this list with additional achieved goals.
