Workers' Comp Attorneys Provide Guidance to Professional Organizations Across Illinois

In February, attorneys from several of our offices spoke to local businesses and professional groups around Illinois on workers' compensation issues affecting employers.

Brad Ingram (Peoria) presented to a group of approximately 30 school administrators at an Illinois Association of School Business Officials meeting entitled "Workers Compensation – The Good…The Bad…The Ugly…." held at the Morton Community Bank in East Peoria. Mr. Ingram discussed the value of early return-to-work programs, AMA ratings, and the 2011 changes to the Workers' Compensation Act specifically in regard to utilization reviews.

Kevin Luther (Rockford) spoke at two management training sessions for civil construction professionals, including senior management, project managers, superintendents, frontline foreman and a safety team. The sessions focused on the role of supervision in preventing workers' compensation incidents, an overview of the workers' comp system, and the challenges employers face once a case is filed.

Brad Elward (Peoria) co-chaired a Workers' Compensation CLE at the Peoria County Bar Association and moderated a panel of Commissioners. He also prepared a case law update that provided a detailed overview and assessment of the appellate court and Illinois Supreme Court workers' compensation decisions made during 2013. At the same event, Craig Young (Peoria) spoke on recent "arising out of" and traveling employee appellate decisions, and Brad Peterson (Urbana) spoke on the issues of Medicare Secondary Payer Act compliance in workers' compensation, as well as Medicare reforms under the SMART Act.

Mr. Elward also moderated a panel discussion with the Appellate Court, Workers' Compensation Commission Division at the Appellate Lawyers' Association Workers' Compensation Seminar in Chicago, and spoke at the event on handling judicial reviews before the circuit court and appeals before the appellate court.

Mr. Peterson also spoke in February at the Illinois State Bar Association's advanced workers' compensation seminar in Fairview Heights, Illinois. He presented on the issue of the use of AMA impairment ratings in Illinois workers' compensation arbitrations. His presentation included a survey of commission decisions handed down since AMA impairment ratings became admissible in 2011.

Brad Antonacci (Rockford) and Dan Simmons (Springfield) spoke on vocational rehabilitation from the respondent's perspective at a series of Workers' Compensation Institute programs held by the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education.
