Mike Schag Authors Chapter in "Military Service and the Law"

Mike Schag, a partner in the firm's Edwardsville office, is a contributing author for a book published by the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education aimed at raising awareness of the legal issues surrounding military service. Schag is also an Air Force Reserve officer at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. The book is entitled, "Military Service and the Law." Schag is a co-author of the book's chapter entitled, "Servicemembers Civil Relief Act." Regarding that Act, Schag says it is the "broadest collection of rights afforded to military members by virtue of active duty service in our nation's history." He adds, "That law can literally stop a lawsuit dead in its tracks while a military member is deployed, and it can do many other things like change the rights under a contract or obligations on a debt."

Schag has spoken on similar military law topics before many groups and most recently gave a presentation at a Southern Illinois University seminar on "Military Service & the Law" on February 20. The program was webcast to five different law schools around the country. In his private practice, Schag concentrates his practice in toxic tort, commercial, insurance litigation, and government contracts law, with a special emphasis on how issues of military service impact commercial business. When he dons his uniform as an Air Force JAG lawyer, he deals with these issues in a different role.
