Firm Partner, Lt. Colonel Mike Schag, Receives Meritorious Service Medal


Heyl Royster partner Mike Schag is an Air Force Reserve Judge Advocate having served in uniform for nearly twenty years. On June 19, Mike received the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) in a ceremony held at the Tanker Airlift Control Center, Scott Air Force Base. It is the sixth time that he has received this decoration. Earlier this year, Mike received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, also a decoration that he has been awarded several times. Praised as a "Solomon-like legal advisor," Colonel Schag has presided over several serious discharge board actions and continued a long career of teaching and mentoring the generations in trial advocacy. He was also instrumental in overcoming evidentiary challenges in high-visibility terrorist prosecutions.

The citation to Mike's latest MSM states that Lt. Colonel Michael D. Schag "distinguished himself in the performance of outstanding service to the United States as Assistant Staff Judge Advocate to 618th Air and Space Operations Center, Air Mobility Command, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. During this period, Colonel Schag demonstrated unparalleled insight navigating tough regulatory environs to properly secure contract aircraft for channel operations. A superior Individual Mobilization Assistant Staff Judge Advocate, he made his presence known from day-one providing advice crucial to averting a misuse of Title 10 refueling funds. Colonel Schag repeatedly delivered exemplary results in daunting leadership roles steering the largest CONUS TRIALS program at Nellis AFB, and leading the Pacific Trial Advocacy Conferences at Osan Air Base, South Korea, and Yokota Air Base, Japan."

Mike has co-authored two highly acclaimed books to assist veterans and military families with legal issues and was twice named as an Illinois Leading Lawyer in Military Law and other legal disciplines.
