Edwardsville Office Provides Opportunities for High School Students

02/26/2016

Many Heyl Royster lawyers volunteer their time to support bar activities designed to enhance legal education. In the Edwardsville office, the firm participates in the Madison County Bar Association's high school student internship program as well as the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis' (BAMSL) Mock Trial Competition. Jennifer Johnson serves on the committee charged with running the Edwardsville internship program, which has hosted high school interns since 2011. Rick Hunsaker has served as a volunteer mock trial coach at Cor Jesu Academy in St. Louis for the past three years.

The Missouri High School Mock Trial is BAMSL's most established program. The program is supported by the Saint Louis Bar Foundation and the Missouri Lawyer Trust Account Foundation. This Mock Trial Competition serves students throughout Missouri and is supported by more than 400 attorneys who volunteer as coaches, judges, and evaluators. The competition helps students develop and improve their public speaking and critical thinking skills.

Cor Jesu Academy recently finished first in the St. Louis preliminary rounds of the Mock Trial Competition. There were over 50 St. Louis area schools involved and two of Cor Jesu Academy's teams finished in the top ten – a feat unmatched by any other school in the 2016 competition. Cor Jesu Academy has advanced to the Regional Playoffs which will be held in Clayton, MO in March.
